Shin Splints

Shin splints happen when the muscles and tissues around the shin bone(tibia) become irritated from repeated impact. This usually happens from running, jumping, or a sudden increase in workload. They’re common in athletes that build up workouts too quickly, train on hard surfaces, or have tight calves and hamstrings. The pain in usually felt on the inner part of the shin and can either be from a dull ache to a sharp pain.

Let’s keep those shins pain-free!

Think of your shins like a shock absorber. They work the best when you muscles are strong and flexible. Having mobile calves and hamstrings, maintaining strong feet and hips, and exercising on softer surfaces can reduce the amount of force being exerted on your shin. Building up activity slowly and including exercises such as split squat holds, short jogs, and calf stretches can keep your shins healthy and ready to work!
