Sever’s Disease
Sever's disease happens when the growth plate at the back of the heel bone becomes irritated and inflamed from repeated pulling by the Achilles tendon. It is common when young athletes go through rapid growth spurts, suddenly increase training intensity, or spend too much time running and jumping on hard surfaces. Pain or severe tenderness is felt directly on the back or bottom of the heel, usually during or right after sports like soccer, basketball, or baseball.
Let’s keep your growing heels happy!
The heel bone in a young athlete is like a puzzle piece still hardening into solid bone, making it extra sensitive to tight muscles pulling on it. Wearing supportive shoes with cushioned heels helps absorb harsh shock, while sticking to a gradual training progression and softer ground reduces the constant tugging on the heel plate. Exercises such as wall calf stretches, bent-knee wall stretches, and towel scrunches improve flexibility and foot strength, allowing your heels to handle movement safely.
